Summary of the contracting process

Queen's University Belfast is spearheading its procurement process by seeking expressions of interest for the supply, delivery, commissioning, installation, consumables, and maintenance of a Femtosecond Laser Workstation. This initiative, under the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC), targets expanding its core capabilities in Digital Factory, Smart Design, Sustainable Polymers and Composites, Nanotechnology, and Photonics. The initiative is currently in the planning stage, with a key milestone set for pre-market engagement through 19th January 2026, rounded off by the expected announcement of a formal tender notice on 19th February 2026. Located in Northern Ireland, this procurement falls under the category of goods and aims to support the industry 4.0 solutions across the manufacturing sector, with the facility opening scheduled for early 2026 within the Global Point Newtownabbey area.

This procurement presents substantial business growth opportunities, especially for businesses in the manufacturing and engineering industries. Suppliers specializing in advanced laser technology and capable of integrating innovative solutions into manufacturing processes are particularly well-suited to compete. By engaging early in the pre-market engagement process, businesses can position themselves as potential suppliers, enabling them to propose solutions that meet AMIC's advanced technology requirements, potentially securing long-term collaborations and contracts. This also encourages the diversification of supplier portfolios into high-value manufacturing solutions tailored for the future Factory at Newtownabbey.
