Summary of the contracting process

Southern Water Services Limited is in the planning stage of a significant procurement process titled "Southern Water Littlehampton & Medway Water Recycling Plants," focusing on the construction and water-treatment industry segment. Located in Worthing, UK, this private utility initiative aims to implement strategic water recycling schemes at Littlehampton and Medway, enhancing drought resilience by providing purified recycled water. A market engagement request for information (RFI) runs from 18th December to 15th January, with the potential to extend if required. This procurement is part of Southern Water's alignment with Environmental Agency directives and regional planning under the WRSE and WRMP24, aimed at reducing river system abstraction.

This tender presents a substantial opportunity for businesses specializing in water treatment and construction work within water projects. Companies with expertise in environmental management and water recycling technologies are well-positioned to compete. As the process is currently in the planning phase with no firm procurement strategy yet undertaken, businesses can influence future procurement decisions by participating in the RFI and subsequent engagement events. Involvement in this project can significantly boost a company's profile within the utility sector, offering long-term contracts that could last until 2048. The engagement offers insight into Southern Water's aims to deliver value for money and sustainable solutions, highlighting the importance of innovation and reliability in prospective suppliers.

Notice Information

Notice Title

Southern Water Littlehampton & Medway Water Recycling Plants

Notice Description

Southern Water is advancing two strategic water recycling schemes, Medway and Littlehampton, to deliver up to 33.4 million litres per day of purified recycled water during drought conditions. These schemes will reduce abstraction from sensitive river systems, support environmental destinations, and ensure resilient water supplies for future generations. The Projects respond to Environment Agency directives to reduce abstraction and to regional forecasts of supply deficits under Water Resource South East (WRSE) and Water Resource Management Plan 2024 (WRMP24) planning scenarios. The schemes are essential to meeting Southern Water's obligations under the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and are expected to contribute to achieving environmental destination outcomes in sensitive catchments.
