Summary of the contracting process

Loughborough University, a public authority in sub-central government, has completed a procurement process for the acquisition of a high-speed emissions gas analyser. This contract was directly awarded to Cambustion Limited, based in Cambridge, as part of a procurement strategy prioritising highly specialised and technically unique equipment. The contract commenced on 21st January 2026 and is set to conclude on 20th July 2026. The procurement method used was a direct award due to the unique capabilities required for the project, which encompasses the industry category of laboratory, optical, and precision equipment. The total contract value is £203,553 before VAT, and it is essential for research and development in high-temperature combustion practices, placing it at the forefront of technological advancement relevant to future defence platforms.

This procurement presents significant business growth opportunities, particularly for companies specialising in high-precision scientific instruments and those offering groundbreaking technological solutions tailored for demanding conditions. The analyser’s sophisticated measurement capabilities are pivotal in industries such as defence and aerospace, where rapid response and resilience to extreme environments are paramount. SMEs focusing on niche markets within these sectors would find such opportunities highly beneficial, especially those that can supply or support advanced sensor technologies and analytics for high-temperature and fast-response applications. Loughborough University's procurement sets a precedent, providing a market opening for suppliers capable of delivering cutting-edge scientific equipment with the necessary technical characteristics to meet demanding research and operational needs.

Notice Title

Loughborough University - Gas Analyser

Notice Description

The equipment is a stack of high-speed emissions gas analysers. The flame ionisation detector (FID) for hydrocarbons, chemiluminescence detector (CLD) for NO,NO2, and non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) and CO CO2 have a fast (sub 20 millisecond) response time and are combined in a single heated manifold with calibrated cross interferences for combustion applications meeting industry certified standards. The fast response rate enables area resolved fast traverses in high temperature short time scale combustion facilities, and time resolved measurement of combustion transients, essential for technology development related to future defence platforms. Procurement Information

This equipment is unique in its high-speed response (FID & NDIR & CLD) which enables fast traverses for area resolved measurements of HC, CO, CO2, NO, NO2 in high temperature short timescale environments, enabling calculation of fuel distribution and temperature distribution within a gas turbine flame. The fast response rate minimises the duration of an emissions map to be completed, which is essential due to the limited supply of compressed air in a blow-down flow facility. The fast response time minimises the time the probe spends within the extreme temperature of a gas turbine flame, which prevents the probes melting or failing. The fast response enables time resolved measurements of transients and dynamics within the flame. This is the only system available that meets the temporal and therefore spatial resolution required for the facility.
