Summary of the contracting process

The Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), a central government public authority in the UK, is conducting a procurement process for "Military Working Dogs (MWD) - 4 Variants." The project is currently at the tender stage with plans to use a Competitive Flexible Procedure for selecting suppliers. DE&S is based in Bristol and is looking for canine capabilities, including Canine Protection and Detection Dogs (CPAD) across two levels, Specialist Search Dogs, and Mobile Ground Sensor units. The process opens the door for submissions until 25th February 2026, through the Defence Sourcing Portal (DSP). Key forthcoming dates include the estimated release of Invitation to Tender (ITT) materials on 1st March 2026 and its closure on 1st May 2026.

The procurement of canine capabilities offers significant opportunities for businesses specialising in dog training, kennel services, and small animal care, as classified under CPV codes. The process favours SMEs and involves a PSQ phase to select the top six suppliers for ITT invitation. With a gross value of GBP 3,782,400, the contract spans from 2026 to 2029, with options for yearly extensions until 2036, allowing businesses to build long-term partnerships with the Ministry of Defence. The award will focus on value for money while leveraging technical competencies, making it attractive for well-qualified niche providers in the defence-related service industry.
