Summary of the contracting process

West Northamptonshire Council is initiating a public procurement process to undertake the Duston Reservoir Path Replacement project. The aim is to restore the path around Duston Reservoir in Northampton, UK, ensuring it remains safe and accessible for the local community, whilst contributing to flood protection efforts. The tender is at the 'active' stage, with an open procurement method under the Below Threshold category. The industry category pertains to surface work for footpaths. Businesses interested in participating must submit their tenders by midday on 27 February 2026. The contractual period for this project is scheduled from 1 May 2026 to 31 August 2026.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses in the construction sector, particularly those specialising in footpath surface works. Companies with experience in bituminous and stone macadam path restoration will find this project especially suitable. The council seeks to appoint a single supplier as the Principal Contractor, who will be tasked with delivering the work to high standards of quality and safety. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to apply as the procurement process is inclusive, supporting sectoral diversity and growth. With a budget of £240,000, this contract provides a stable revenue stream while allowing businesses to reinforce their presence in the public infrastructure sector.

Notice Title

WNC Duston Reservoir Path Replacement

Notice Description

West Northamptonshire Council owns and manages many areas of amenity land to the benefit of the local and wider community. The Council manages a large body of open water at Duston Reservoir. As well as being a valuable amenity, the reservoir also serves to provide part of the Northampton flood protection measures. The site includes a circular path, which is partly of bituminous and partly of graded stone macadam construction. The circular path is constructed upon the crest of a raised embankment, which was itself constructed in 1997. Continued consolidation of the embankment has led to movement, cracking and failures of sections of the bituminous path. The stone macadam path has eroded and requires surface restoration. This project will restore the surface integrity of the paths through a mixture of stone surface siding out and resurfacing, bituminous surface reinforcement and re-surfacing, bituminous surface crack sealing and bituminous surface reconstruction. The scope of works is described in detail within the contract drawings Working Methodology: Bituminous path reconstruction will be by traditional methods with as much work as is practicable to be undertaken by mechanical plant. This is in order to minimise the extent of manual handling required. Bituminous path restoration work will be through the removal of surface course and the reinforcement of the surface/binder course interface with a proprietary net. Stone macadam path restoration will be by siding out overgrown edges to expose existing path edges and laying a new surface course of self-binding gravel.
