Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh procured strategic leadership training for experienced mid-career researchers with the potential and motivation to become prominent future research leaders. The appointed supplier is expected to co-design, deliver and monitor the programme, developing research leadership skills and behaviours that apply in both internal and external research environments. The service combines in-person and virtual events and includes one six-month programme each year for cohorts of up to 24 participants. Cohorts may be open or targeted. This is a professional training and staff development service, including personal development training, delivered for the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh. The requirement covers the programme’s associated services as well as its core training elements.

This completed open procedure was awarded to MY Consultants Ltd. The award is active and relates to the single requirement. The award outcome was recorded from 4 May 2026, and the contract was signed on 24 June 2026. The contract value is £175,604; the earlier estimated tender value was £183,333.34 including a 10% contingency for additional associated services. The anticipated contract period is August 2026 to July 2028, with two possible 12-month extensions taking it to July 2030. Quality carried 80% of the evaluation weighting and price 20%. The process received 18 electronic bids, all from SMEs. The contract permits subcontracting, and bidders were required to submit in English.

This procurement demonstrates a recurring requirement for a specialist provider able to design and run structured leadership development programmes for experienced researchers. A credible competitor would need relevant experience delivering comparable training services, including evidence of successfully managing programme content, cohorts and monitoring. The service calls for capability across both face-to-face and virtual delivery, with capacity to support annual cohorts of up to 24 participants over a six-month programme. Suppliers should be able to tailor delivery for open and targeted cohorts and understand research leadership in both university and wider research environments. Commercial readiness also matters: the stated requirements included general annual turnover of at least £100,000, employers’ liability insurance of £5 million, public liability insurance of £2 million and professional indemnity insurance of £1 million. Subcontracting arrangements had to be declared.
