Summary of the contracting process

Brockenhurst College procured school catering and hospitality services for The Hard Brock Restaurant and The Hard Brock Coffee, both at Brockenhurst College on Lyndhurst Road in Brockenhurst, Hampshire. The appointed provider is expected to operate food and beverage services across both locations for students, staff, visitors and the college’s senior team. The scope includes improving food and coffee offers, maintaining consistent food-service standards, engaging customers through digital platforms and social media, aligning the offer with customer profiles, and supporting hospitality requirements. The service is intended to respond to increasing student numbers and changing expectations, with innovation, investment and environmentally responsible delivery forming part of the requirement. The college currently operates the catering service itself and has limited local competition.

The procurement is complete and was run as an above-threshold, open competitive flexible procedure. One lot was evaluated on quality at 70% and price at 30%; the lot was suitable for SMEs. Two bids reached the final stage. Aramark Ltd was selected on 24 June 2026 for £2,280,000 gross. The award standstill ends on 27 July 2026, with signature scheduled for 28 July 2026. The contract period is 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2029, with an option for one further three-year renewal to a maximum extent of 31 July 2032. The award covers the full catering requirement at both college locations. The procedure required electronic submission in English, with enquiries closing on 16 March 2026 and bids closing on 22 May 2026.

This award demonstrates demand for outsourced college catering covering restaurant, coffee-shop, food-and-beverage and hospitality operations at a substantial tertiary education site. A credible future competitor would need to manage a complete service across two locations, serve students, staff and visitors reliably, and improve both the food offer and customer experience. Relevant strengths include digital customer engagement, social-media marketing, customer profiling, menu and offer development, operational innovation, and the ability to invest in service improvements. Suppliers should also be able to evidence meaningful progress towards carbon neutrality, deliver measurable environmental and social value, report performance through management reviews, and maintain a fully staffed operation through progressive employment terms and low staff turnover. The award’s SME suitability indicates that smaller capable operators may be able to compete, directly or through suitable delivery capacity.
