Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has completed awarding a contract for a mobile EEG system, under a VEAT notice titled "VEAT Notice for Mobile EEG," in the laboratory, optical, and precision equipment category. The contract has been awarded to ANT Neuro UK without prior publication due to the absence of competition for technical reasons. This procurement falls within the "goods" main category and is a limited procurement method justified by a lack of suitable alternatives to meet specific technical requirements. The process is in the 'Award' stage, with the contract signed on 23 February 2026. The delivery location is the University of Edinburgh in the UK, primarily serving educational purposes under the governance of public law.

This procurement provides significant growth opportunities for businesses specialising in high-density mobile EEG systems compatible with immersive VR environments. Businesses with expertise in producing lightweight, wireless EEG systems that facilitate naturalistic movement alongside superior signal quality for research-grade analysis are particularly suited to this contract. Furthermore, companies offering innovative solutions that ensure precise synchronisation with VR systems and those holding medical-grade certifications can benefit from this contract, given the potential progression towards clinical applications. Suppliers compliant with high regulatory standards within the medical device sector and capable of integrating cutting-edge technology are likely to thrive through similar procurement opportunities.

Notice Title

VEAT Notice for Mobile EEG

Notice Description

The University of Edinburgh is intending to award a contract without prior publication for a mobile EEG system to Ant Neuro UK due to competition being absent for technical reasons.

Lot Information

Lot 1

The University of Edinburgh is intending to award a contract without prior publication for a mobile EEG system to Ant Neuro UK due to competition being absent for technical reasons. 1. High-Density EEG Capability (128 Channels Minimum) * Minimum of 128 recording channels * Uniform high-density scalp coverage * Research-grade signal quality suitable for: o Spatial filtering o Source localisation o Fine-grained analysis of cortical dynamics * Stable impedance control across all electrodes * Low-noise amplification appropriate for high-resolution modelling 2. Fully Mobile, Research-Grade System for Immersive VR The research design includes naturalistic movement and immersive VR paradigms. The EEG system must therefore be: * Fully mobile and wireless * Lightweight and body-worn (e.g., backpack-mounted amplifier) * Compatible with VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) without interfering with: o Headset fit o Participant comfort o Range of motion * Resistant to motion-induced artefacts * Designed with low-profile electrodes and integrated wiring * Mechanically stable during head and body movement 3. Precise Synchronisation with VR Systems The system must support robust and low-latency synchronisation between EEG data and VR events. Required features include: * Hardware-level synchronisation (e.g., TTL triggers) * Network-based synchronisation (e.g., Lab Streaming Layer - LSL) * Millisecond-level timing precision * Reliable integration with VR software platforms 4. Medical-Grade Certification Given the potential progression of this research toward clinical translation, the EEG system must: * Hold valid medical CE certification * Comply with applicable medical device regulatory standards * Be suitable for future clinical research use without requiring hardware replacement
