Summary of the contracting process

National Grid UK Limited intends to procure plant hire services across the UK to support operational work, capital delivery, maintenance, emergency response and infrastructure activities. The scope covers supplying, delivering, collecting, maintaining and supporting plant and equipment, primarily without operators. The planned service categories are crane and lifting solutions, powered access equipment, and general plant and equipment. Two areas are described: crane hire, including ancillary lifting equipment, contract lifts, lift planning, mobilisation, inspection, certification, breakdown response and replacement provision; and general plant hire, including general plant, lifting equipment, MEWPs, forklifts, access platforms, lifting accessories and support services. The work will support National Grid’s construction, maintenance and operational activities throughout the UK.

This procurement is at the planning stage; National Grid has announced its intention to procure and has not yet invited tenders. It expects to use a selective competitive flexible procedure under the utilities regime, with an accelerated process, and intends to establish a closed framework with an initial two-year term from 1 February 2027 to 31 January 2029. The framework may be renewed for up to six further years, with a maximum extent to 31 January 2035. There are two planned lots: Crane Hire and General Plant Hire. The buyer expects the next notice on 9 September 2026 and expects to complete the award process by 1 February 2027. Suppliers wishing to participate are expected to submit an expression of interest and complete the required onboarding form by 19 September 2026.

The requirement is likely to suit plant hire companies, crane and lifting specialists, powered access providers, equipment fleet operators and managed equipment service businesses able to support National Grid sites across the UK. Relevant capability includes supplying and transporting varied equipment, planned mobilisation, inspection and certification, preventative maintenance, breakdown response, replacement provision and operational support. Crane specialists should be able to provide contract lifts and lift planning, while general plant providers should cover equipment such as MEWPs, forklifts, access platforms, lifting accessories and other construction plant. Suppliers should be prepared to demonstrate safe, compliant and responsive operations, sustainable service delivery, cost control and continuous improvement. Businesses may be well placed through a broad national network, reliable fleet capacity and experience supporting utility, infrastructure, construction or maintenance activity.
