Peterborough City Council is seeking arboricultural services to maintain its tree stock and support a safe, healthy and sustainable urban forest. The work covers about 40,000 trees across Peterborough, including those on highways, in parks, open spaces, cemeteries, churchyards, allotments, schools and the Crematorium, as well as other public assets. Services include planned and reactive pruning and crown management, tree felling and dismantling, emergency call-outs and storm response, stump management, young tree care, highway and public-realm maintenance, woodland and shelterbelt management, and control of pests, diseases and invasive species where required. This is a single-provider requirement for tree maintenance and tree-cutting services, including pruning.

The council invited tenders through an open procedure. The enquiry deadline was 16 October 2026 at 17:00, and the bid deadline was 23 October 2026 at 14:00. The stated evaluation weighting is 70% price and 30% quality. The estimated value is £7 million excluding VAT (£8.4 million including VAT). The initial contract period runs from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2032, with five optional 12-month extensions, potentially extending the period to 31 March 2037. The procurement is divided into one lot, as the council intends to appoint a single contractor to deliver a consistent, integrated service. The selection criterion requires an Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor.

This opportunity is suited to established arboricultural contractors able to meet the Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor requirement and deliver services across a substantial, varied public tree stock. Suppliers need capability in routine tree pruning, crown management, felling and dismantling, stump removal, young-tree establishment, and maintenance in highways and public spaces. The scope also calls for responsive emergency and storm work, alongside woodland and shelterbelt management and, where required, expertise addressing pests, diseases and invasive species. Contractors should be able to organise planned and reactive work across diverse sites, including schools, cemeteries and parks, and provide a cohesive service as the sole appointed provider. Small and medium-sized businesses are identified as suitable to compete; quality contributes to the evaluation alongside price.

Peterborough City Council manages and maintains a significant and diverse tree stock in line with the Council's Trees and Woodland Strategy. This currently comprises approximately 40,000 specimen trees across a wide range of locations within the unitary authority boundary, including highways, parks, open spaces, cemeteries, churchyards, allotments, schools and the Crematorium, together with other public assets. The Council is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy and sustainable urban forest that contributes positively to the environment, biodiversity, climate resilience and the wellbeing of residents. The Council is therefore seeking a competent Arboricultural Association (ARB) Approved contractor to deliver a range of arboricultural services within the Peterborough area, to support this endeavour. The contract duties will include: - Tree pruning and crown management. - Tree felling and dismantling operations. - Emergency call-out and storm response services. - Stump removal and management. - Young tree maintenance and establishment. - Highway and public realm tree maintenance. - Woodland and shelterbelt management. - Management of pests, diseases and invasive species where required. The purpose of the contract will be to support the delivery of these objectives through planned and reactive arboricultural maintenance services. The anticipated contract commencement is 1st April 2027 with an initial term of 5 years and the option for a further five optional extensions of 12 months each.
