Summary of the contracting process

National Grid UK Limited plans to establish a hardware reseller framework to supply IT equipment to its UK and US businesses. The scope includes network infrastructure, cyber security equipment, servers and related hardware, with associated services such as technical support, lifecycle and warranty management, asset visibility and value-added services. The framework is intended to provide a scalable route to market as National Grid’s technology needs evolve, while improving supply-chain resilience and governance and supporting sustainability objectives. Deliveries will serve National Grid operations in the United Kingdom and the United States. The procurement is for goods, particularly computer equipment, information systems and servers, alongside related installation services. The buyer intends to create separate frameworks for the UK and US markets.

This is at the planning stage: National Grid has stated its intention to procure, but has not yet invited tenders. It expects to use a competitive flexible procedure and to establish closed frameworks, with up to three strategic reseller partners on each framework. The frameworks may award work with or without reopening competition. The estimated value is £48 million excluding VAT (£57 million including VAT). The planned contract period is three years from April 2027 to March 2030, with renewal options described as an initial three years plus two years and yearly increments, up to a maximum of eight years. The buyer expects to decide awards by March 2027. It expects to publish a further notice in October 2026; the stated expression-of-interest date is 19 October 2026. This date is an indicative planning point, not an invitation to bid.

The planned framework is aimed at established IT hardware resellers able to supply leading original equipment manufacturer technologies across both UK and US operations. The buyer is looking for a limited group of strategic partners able to offer competitive pricing, dependable supply and the capacity to support a broad, evolving technology requirement. Relevant strengths include network infrastructure and cyber security equipment, servers and associated hardware services, together with technical support, lifecycle and warranty management, asset visibility and value-added services. Suppliers with international reach, resilient supply chains and the ability to support sustainability and strong governance objectives are likely to be well placed. The framework is intended to provide a scalable route to market, so businesses able to manage ongoing hardware needs and support call-offs made with or without further competition should consider preparing for the later tender.
