NWSSP CARDIFF AND VALE LOCAL HEALTH BOARD

This public procurement record has 2 releases in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The NWSSP Cardiff and Vale Local Health Board has awarded a two-year contract for the supply of Vagal Nerve Stimulators (VNS) to LivaNova UK Ltd. The procurement stage was at the award phase, with the contract signed on 14th February 2023. The location of the procurement is Cardiff, UK, in the Health industry category. The Health Board opted for a limited procurement method without prior competition due to LivaNova's monopoly on VSN products, necessary for treating seizures.

This tender creating opportunities for business growth is suited for companies in the healthcare sector specialising in Vagal Nerve Stimulator technologies. As LivaNova UK Ltd holds a monopoly in this market, partnering with them for production and supply of VNS products could lead to significant business growth. The award of the contract signifies a potential for future collaborations in the Health industry, specifically in manufacturing specialised medical devices for therapeutic purposes.

Vagal Nerve Stimulator (VNS)

Notice Description

The Neurosciences department within Cardiff and Vale Local Health Board currently perform Vagal Nerve Stimulator (VNS) therapy. VNS therapy is delivered through an implanted device that sends mild pulses to the vagus nerve at regular intervals throughout the day in an effort to reduce and/or prevent seizures. Patients are referred to this type of therapy when drugs have failed to provide a more manageable treatment. These devices are programmable for a personalised therapy approach and the technology is highly specialised. Currently Livanova hold the monopoly of the global market for VSN products as they hold the patent for the manufacture and production of these stimulators, therefore the Health Board are proposing to award a two year contract.
