5G Mobile Private Network (MPN)

PRIFYSGOL BANGOR / BANGOR UNIVERSITY

This public procurement record has 3 releases in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process for the acquisition of a 5G Mobile Private Network (MPN) by Bangor University, a public law body located in Bangor, has reached the award stage as of 28th May 2025. The procurement, with a primary focus on goods such as electrical equipment and communications networks, was conducted through an open procurement method. The contract for this project has been awarded to Vodafone, and the contract was formally signed on 23rd May 2025. The MPN will be used within the university's DSP Centre, funded by the North Wales Growth Deal, to cover two laboratories. While the initial planning began in June 2024, the tender submissions closed at the end of September 2024, and an award decision followed in early October 2024.

This procurement offers substantial growth opportunities for businesses involved in advanced communication technologies, particularly those capable of providing high data rate and low latency solutions. Companies specialising in health, agri-tech, and enviro-tech can benefit, given the interest in these 5G use cases for public demonstrations. The demand for future scalability and the consideration of carbon reduction and biodiversity in tender submissions also open doors for innovative businesses. With a focus on providing community benefits and social value outcomes, companies that can align with Bangor University's economic and social objectives will find this project aligned with their capabilities and growth strategies.

Notice Title

5G Mobile Private Network (MPN)

Notice Description

The DSP Centre at Bangor University undertakes research in advanced communication technologies in its state-of-the-art research facility which is partly funded by the North Wales Growth Deal (NWGD) through Ambition North Wales. To further expand our research capabilities, we plan to acquire a 5G Mobile Private Network, and will also require installation/set-up support and training.A 5G MPN is required for indoor operation, covering two physically separated laboratories within the same building, (each approx. 12m x 7m). The MPN should be able to support applications requiring high data rates and low latency. The number of supported user terminals does not need to be excessively large. The support for future system scalability, such as increased coverage area, will be a key consideration. We will also be assessing the 5G use cases the supplier can offer for public demonstration purposes. Use cases of interest include health/medical, agri-tech and enviro-tech. The MPN should operate in a spectral band supported by an Ofcom shared access licence.
