Summary of the contracting process

The Welsh Government, through its Corporate Procurement Services in Cardiff, has concluded an award stage for the tender titled "Catalog Casgliadau Cymru (A Catalogue of Welsh Collections)." This service-based procurement, aimed at developing a formal recognition scheme for significant museum collections in Wales, was awarded on 13th September 2024. The successful supplier, Headland Design Associates, is based in Malpas. The process considered the need to recognise local and independent museums' collections to enhance advocacy, fundraising, and understanding of Wales's cultural heritage. The initial tender was published on 24th July 2024, with submissions due by 28th August 2024.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in research and development consultancy services, particularly those with experience in museum services. Companies engaged in the cultural sector or those looking to expand into this field can leverage this project to build their portfolios and gain recognition. The streamlined recognition scheme offers a niche yet impactful focus, suited for enterprises proficient in heritage consultancy and museum management. Smaller firms and consortia with innovative approaches to heritage conservation and advocacy are likely to find this tender particularly beneficial for business growth.

Notice Title

Catalog Casgliadau Cymru (A Catalogue of Welsh Collections)

Notice Description

Catalog Casgliadau Cymru - A Catalogue of Welsh CollectionsMuseums hold objects that tell the story of their locality and communities, and therefore hold key resources to help tell the story of Wales as a whole. Local and independent organisations hold objects and collections that are on a par with those held by our national bodies in their significance but at present there is no formal way of recognising this in Wales. In 2023, the Culture Division commissioned a consultation on a national recognition scheme. The consultation process demonstrated positive feedback from museum staff for a scheme that recognised important and nationally important collections in museums in Wales. This would enable advocacy, fundraising and a better understanding of the story of Wales through its museum collections. However, there was a lot of reservation about a scheme that would be unequal, with an involved and costly process and a panel making a decision at the end. A number of options were considered with the following recommendation made:"Support organisations to understand the significance of their collections and also introduce a streamlined formal recognition scheme".The Client wishes to appoint Supplier to take forward the recommendation. The objective of the work is to plan, develop a 'recognition' type scheme that best fits the Welsh context and the requirements of our museum sector and communities.
