Summary of the contracting process

Natural Resources Wales, known for its management of the Welsh Government Woodland Estate, has concluded the NRW Respacing, cleaning and weeding framework as of 30th April 2025. This framework aimed at providing respacing and cleaning services in various regions of Wales, across industry categories such as Environmental protection, and was executed using an open procedure for procurement. The procurement process encompassed distinct lots targeting different regions, including North West, North East, and South West Wales, to name a few, with the entire framework spanning a potential 48 months. The total estimated value of this project ranged from £3.7 million to £4.5 million, though actual spend levels were not guaranteed.

The awarded opportunities present substantial avenues for business growth, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which were among the awarded suppliers. The provision of services like mechanical and hand weeding, high pruning, and creation of inspection racks offers diverse engagement scopes for businesses specializing in environmental protection and forestry services. SMEs such as GMD FORESTRY LIMITED and DTPH ARB & GROUNDWORKS LTD, alongside larger firms like Tilhill Forestry Ltd, exemplified the breadth of successful bidders. With a focus on quality and price, the framework not only bolstered regional business operations but underlined the potential for collaborative consortiums, thereby widening the strategic growth and partnership opportunities for varying scales of enterprises in the Welsh forestry sector.
