Summary of the contracting process

The NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership-Procurement Services, hosted by Velindre University NHS Trust, has successfully completed the procurement process for the provision of Out of Hours (OOH) Personal Dental Services (PDS) for Powys Teaching Health Board. This contract aims to enhance the current NHS primary dental care services within Powys, covering services over weekends and public holidays. The procurement was carried out using an open procedure, focusing on the healthcare sector, specifically under the classification of primary dental services. Contracts were awarded in June 2025 to two suppliers for different lots, which included services on Saturdays and Sundays, with each contract valued at £195,397.86. The location for service delivery is noted as UKL24.

This procurement presents a significant opportunity for service providers in the dental care industry, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to engage with NHS services. Firms specialising in urgent and emergency dental care will find this contract particularly beneficial, given the emphasis on treating urgent dental issues deemed critical. The open procurement method used implies that the process was competitive, encouraging innovation and high-quality service delivery. Businesses looking to expand their healthcare service portfolio, particularly those capable of delivering weekend dental services, are well-suited to participate in such opportunities.

The main objectives are: -Responsibility to secure or provide Primary Dental Services. -The allocation of financial resources for Primary Dental Services. -Powers to commission dental services that best meet local requirements. The DOOH service shall be delivered to individuals with dental problems which are deemed urgent enough, after assessment, to warrant active treatment by a dental professional and where needs cannot safely be deferred until the next working day.",
