Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process, initiated by NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership-Procurement Services, focuses on the maintenance of patient hoists and falls under the health industry category. This contract serves the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board estate, located in Cardiff, UK. The procurement stage is currently at the award stage, with the contract having been signed on 8th September 2025. The process used a limited procurement method, entailing an award procedure without prior call for competition due to technical reasons. This contract is crucial as it enables the maintenance and repair of equipment essential for patient mobility and safety, enhancing efficiency in healthcare service delivery.

This tender presents a specialised business opportunity primarily for large businesses with the capability of maintaining medical equipment. The contract was awarded to the OEM, ArjoHuntleigh, because it was determined that no other supplier could fulfil the safety and compliance requirements. Businesses in the medical equipment maintenance industry, particularly those focusing on compliance with health and safety regulations, would find similar tenders vital for expanding their portfolio and footprint within healthcare services, particularly through frameworks such as the NHS Supply Chain. Companies specialising in technical service provision that ensures the adherence to strict health guidelines are well-suited to participate in similar tenders.

Notice Description

Lot Information

Lot 1

This contract is for the maintenance and repair of all patient hoists across the Cardiff and Vale Health Board estate. Patient hoists are a vital piece of equipment for all sites as they allow clinical staff to lift and transfer patients with limited mobility. This improves patient safety and helps to increase the efficiency in which tasks can be performed. Upon review it was found only the original manufacturer of the hoists could compliantly undertake the maintenance and therefore this contract has been directly awarded, via the NHS Supply Chain framework Maintenance, Repair and Calibration of Medical Equipment (2021/S000-021535)

Procurement Information

There was no prior call for competition as this contract could only be awarded to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). If this contract was awarded to a different supplier then, the safety of the devices may be compromised, the warranty on all equipment would become void and the Health Board may no longer be complying with all necessary regulations. Therefore it was decided to direct award this contract via the NHS Supply Chain framework, Maintenance, Repair and Calibration of Medical Equipment (2021/S000-021535)
