Lot Information

Lot 1

CivTech(r) 2.0 is a programme backed by the Scottish Government that will bring together private sector businesses, public organisations and citizens to develop more efficient and effective products and services, which will translate to new, better, faster and easier experiences for everyone. Innovation is key. By setting challenges - problems public sector organisations have identified - but not solutions, CivTech will be looking for truly great, innovative solutions. Wildlife crime is difficult to combat, prevent and apprehend as it generally takes place in remote areas away from population, and involves species that cover significant distances. This is especially true of birds of prey - or raptors. It's also on the increase, threatens the health of the environments it occurs in, and is also a criminal activity - so those involved take significant steps to cover up any evidence of the incident, and their involvement in it. In Scotland we use small satellite transmitters [attached harmlessly to birds of prey] to monitor them and study their ecology. They can also help us prevent and / or identify wildlife crime hot spots. But the upload of information from these transmitters is not constant, and the number of birds whose transmitters suddenly stop operating is increasing. When site searches take place, they often fail to find the bird or the transmitter. We think that at least in some of these cases, the transmitters are being deliberately disabled by humans: we don't know the ways in which this is done but think they will include physical destruction and / or burying. So the Challenge is this - How can we combat bird of prey persecution? Is there a technological solution that could help reduce raptor crime by making it difficult for anyone to kill a bird without getting caught? Or is there a way to ensure we can find destroyed or hidden transmitters? Or at the very least, is there a way we can be certain of the last known location - one accurately recorded and in a tamper proof way? Please visit https://civtech.atlassian.net/wiki for more information on how to be involved in CivTech(r) 2.0. IMPORTANT: It is vital that applicants review the full information about each challenge available on the CivTech wiki page (https://civtech.atlassian.net/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=45847042) before completing the application. Below each challenge summary is a link to the full challenge, a video, relevant dates and further information about the challenge sponsor.
