Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh, specifically the Institute for Genetic and Molecular Medicine, has completed a procurement process for the acquisition of a Fusion Lumos Mass Spec System. This procurement falls under the goods category and was handled using a limited method, noted for its award procedure without prior publication of a tender. Key details include the contract being signed on 22nd September 2017, with the delivery location at the Institute for Genetic and Molecular Medicine in Edinburgh (postal code EH4 2XU). The procurement is classified under medical research, focusing on advanced mass spectrometry technology.

This contract presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in high-end laboratory equipment and related services, especially those who can provide innovative solutions in mass spectrometry and proteomics. Companies with expertise in advanced scientific instruments, particularly those familiar with integrated analytical systems and post-translational modification analysis, would find this procurement particularly suited to their offerings. Engaging in such procurement could lead to fruitful partnerships with leading educational and research institutions.

Notice Description

Procurement Information

We need to provide information not only on the proteins present in a sample, but how they are modified with phosphorylations, acetylations, methylations and citrullinations. The Thermo Fusion, of which the Lumos is the latest model is unique in design and excels in all these regards, especially in the analysis of proteomic post-translational modifications because it can simultaneously utilise three different fragmentation techniques (CID, HCD and ETD) that give complementary data about peptide composition along with the analysis of lipids and lipid biosynthesis. The high resolution and the ability to fragment ions more than once combine to give analytical capability that is not available on any other existing mass spectrometer. The new mass spectrometer will be integrated into the existing IGMM-MS infrastructure. The Lumos produces Thermo Scientific .Raw files, all proteomic files from the Lumos will be automatically analysed in the same way that happens at the moment for the Q Exactive files - thus the changes to computational infrastructure will be minimal. Furthermore, if either Q Exactive instrument is out of action, then the Lumos can fulfil all of their analyses using the same acquisition files - this is an invaluable safeguard and resource.
