Lot Information
Lot 1
The Wide-field Astronomy Unit (WFAU), which is part of the University of Edinburgh's Institute for Astronomy, is a leading provider of 'sky service services' to the UK and international astronomy community. The UK has a very strong history in survey astronomy and Edinburgh's WFAU has long been at the forefront of this activity. At the time of writing, WFAU curates, on behalf of the UK astronomical community, data from nine cutting-edge sky surveys. WFAU has developed science-archive systems that securely store data from sky surveys and makes them available to users in a flexible manner via the Internet. The main challenge for WFAU in operating these archives is the volumes of data generated by modern sky survey systems. Over the past 15 years, WFAU has exploited the steady progression in disk capacity to sustain a basic sky-survey archive model, with a relational database management system (RDBMS) running on a single database server. However, the multi-Petabyte databases that will be produced by the coming generation of telescope facilities will be far too large to be implemented on a single server, necessitating the deployment of clustered solutions. Bidders are invited to tender for LIT0677 Research Database Service for Royal Observatory of Edinburgh (ROE.), to supply a storage system to serve large science catalogues (as relational databases) to the UK research community. This Contract Agreement covers the period from 29/01/2018 to insert date with the option to extend for a period of three (3) years.. Please note: Economic operators may be excluded from this competition if they are in any of the situations referred to in regulation 8 and 9 of the Procurement (Scotland) Regulations 2016.
