East Lothian Council (ELC) wishes to enter into a partnership to create crematorium facilities within the County. East Lothian currently generates in the region of 1100 funerals per year. Of these, approximately 450 present as traditional burials and the remainder as cremations. Crematoria are available in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders but waiting times are known to be an issue at certain times of the year. East Lothian has a number of cemeteries which are reaching full capacity with limited options for future expansion. The population of East Lothian is projected to grow by about 1% per year over the next 20 years from just over 100,000 to over 125,000 by 2037, with the over 75 years age group expected to grow by almost 100%. The populations of neighbouring councils are also expected increase.
