Notice Information
Notice Title
Uist Raven Survey
Notice Description
Like many other areas across Scotland, ravens in the Western Isles often come into conflict with crofters who report damage to livestock and produce. It is important to gain a good understanding of the raven population in the Uists, to help us make more informed decisions in their management. This tender will serve to provide SNH with: - An assessment of the number and size of raven flocks across the Uists. - To investigate arrival and dispersal patterns at roosts.
Lot Information
Lot 1
Raven flocks are often found throughout the year close to breeding sites, but will forage well away from occupied nests and up to 20km from roost sites. Through surveys, feeding Raven flocks can be monitored in the late afternoon, and will indicate the direction of their roost site as dusk approaches. 1. Survey Fortnightly visits to known roost sites and 'cold' checks elsewhere. This will require watching raven flocks in the late afternoon and noting where they go as dusk falls. 2. Site and Timescale Survey will cover South Uist, Benbecula and North Uist. Nine months: Late May to February (with possibility of three month extension).
