Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has completed a procurement process to acquire a Zeiss Axio Imager.Z2 motorised upright research microscope, designated for Array Tomography, through an open tender method. This procurement is classified under the goods category and falls within the education industry sector. The delivery location for this contract is the UK Dementia Research Institute at the University of Edinburgh. The contract, valued at £113,197.45, was formally signed on 28 January 2019, and represents the culmination of this contract's planning and award stages.

This tender presents a substantial opportunity for businesses that specialise in advanced scientific equipment and technology, particularly in the fields of microscopy and imaging solutions. Firms that manufacture or distribute similar research instruments would find themselves well-suited to compete or expand their offerings in this niche market. Additionally, suppliers of related support services or software could explore collaborations, especially considering the University of Edinburgh's commitment to promoting sharing and collaboration among research communities across the UK Dementia Research Institute.

"description": "Carl Zeiss Ltd. is the sole manufacturer, vendor, and service providers for a microscope and software that are dedicated to Array Tomography. The Zeiss Axio.Imager and Zen software allows us to automatically image hundreds of 1D sections and reconstruct our samples in 3D. With this purchase we are helping to future-proof top-class neuroscience research and publications for the UK Dementia Research Institute at the University of Edinburgh. The UK DRI at UoE is currently made up of the following lab groups: - Hardingham group - Spires-Jones group - Wardlaw group - Chandran group - McColl group - Hunt group - Priller group Horrocks group Four more lab groups will join the UK DRI community in Edinburgh before the end of 2019. The UK DRI, as an entity, is very keen to promote sharing and collaboration. All of our equipment is available to be used by the local research community and by other UK DRI centres (of which there are six around the UK), therefore, this purchase will benefit many researchers. This purchase will open up 3D imaging technology to new users within the UK DRI and within Chancellor's Building. The University of Edinburgh already have a purchasing relationship with Carl Zeiss Ltd. and have many microscopes around the university. The UK DRI has one, older, AxioImager with Array Tomography system. It is located at 1 George Square and is utilised heavily. The purchase of a new, upgraded system, will give us the ability to continue dedicated, streamlined, human neuroscience research within Chancellor's Building, where we currently do not have this technology.
