Notice Title
Orkney Native Wildlife Project - Detection Dogs 2019
Notice Description
The Orkney Native Wildlife Project ('ONWP' hereafter), a partnership between RSPB Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Orkney Islands Council, plans to remove the invasive non-native stoat from Orkney Mainland and the linked isles of Lamb Holm, Glimps Holm, Hunda, Burray and South Ronaldsay, in a trapping operation due to start in late 2019. For this, we require the services of a skilled and experienced conservation detection dog handler(s) and (a) trained and certified stoat detection dog(s).
Lot Information
Lot 1
The Orkney Native Wildlife Project ('ONWP' hereafter), a partnership between RSPB Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Orkney Islands Council, plans to remove the invasive non-native stoat from Orkney Mainland and the linked isles of Lamb Holm, Glimps Holm, Hunda, Burray and South Ronaldsay, in a trapping operation due to start in late 2019. The project will also address the threat of stoats spreading to the non-linked islands of the Orkney archipelago, many of which have been identified as being at high risk of stoats incurring from Orkney Mainland. In the run-up to the eradication, the ONWP partners are maintaining biosecurity containment trapping grids across five sites (Figure 1.) on Orkney Mainland to reduce the risk of stoats spreading to the non-linked, high-risk islands of the archipelago. In response to sightings reported by members of the public, incursion responses (trapping and surveillance) have to date been attempted on the islands of Sanday, Rousay, Shapinsay and Hoy. These islands, as well as a number of smaller stepping stone islands, were checked for presence of stoats/stoat sign by a trained stoat detection dog team during summer 2018. This work suggested the presence of stoat/s in Hoy, but so far trapping and surveillance efforts have not resulted in any animals being caught on the island. No stoats/stoat sign were detected on the other islands checked by the stoat detection dog team. We now require repeat checks to be carried out on the high risk non-linked islands of Orkney during summer 2019, prioritising Hoy but ensuring good coverage is achieved on all the other islands as well. For this, we require the services of a skilled and experienced conservation detection dog handler(s) and (a) trained and certified stoat detection dog(s).. Please note there is flexibility on both the starting time and the duration; suppliers to state their availability in their responses.
