Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh is the contracting authority for the procurement of dual arm robot platforms, titled "Nextage robots." This project falls under the education category and aims to establish a cutting-edge robotics teaching laboratory at the Bayes Centre in Edinburgh, UK. The procurement was conducted via a limited method, without prior publication of a call for competition, and has reached the award stage. The contract was signed on 14 May 2019, with a total value of £628,222, reflecting the urgency of the university's need to enhance its robotics training capabilities.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for technology and robotics suppliers that specialise in advanced automation solutions, particularly those with expertise in dual arm robotic platforms suitable for educational settings. Companies that offer integrated sensing solutions, compatibility with the Robot Operating System (ROS), and the ability to deliver high-performance robotics training tools will be particularly well-positioned to engage in future projects with the University of Edinburgh and similar educational institutions. This is an excellent chance for businesses to expand their market presence in the burgeoning field of robotics education.

Procurement Information

: The robotics department is looking to create a state of the art robotics teaching lab located in the Bayes Centre. The key part of this lab will be the 10 dual arm robot platforms for training industry and research ready graduates on realistic scenarios ranging from warehouse automation to nuclear waste manipulation. For this we require hardware that features two robot arms with approximately 0.8-1m reach for manipulating household item sized objects, cameras (visual or depth cameras), integration with peripherals such as vacuum or finger grippers, and full support for the Robot Operating System (ROS is a software used to program robots in academia and industry). We also require a ROS control interface that will allow our students to stream commands to the robot at 100Hz or more. The Nextage platform by Kawada Robotics offers all of these features. The only other two similar products on the market . Neither of these robots comes with fully integrated sensing solution (cameras) and would require further integration and expenditure to achieve this
