Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has successfully completed the procurement process for a Ti2-E Inverted Microscope, which falls under the education category within the goods sector. This open tender was awarded to Nikon UK, with the contract valued at £82,010.46 and signed on 10 June 2019. The delivery location for this procurement is specified as the School of Biomedical Sciences, Hugh Robson Building, George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9XD. The justification for this award was based on the absence of competition for technical reasons, as the microscope must exactly match existing equipment used in a European collaboration project, CyGenTiG.

This procurement presents a unique opportunity for businesses involved in advanced scientific equipment and custom technology solutions. Companies specialising in high-quality, technical instruments, particularly those with experience in working with educational institutions or collaborative research projects, would be well-positioned to compete. The requirement for precise specifications and compatibility indicates a niche market for suppliers who can deliver tailored solutions for complex scientific endeavours.

"description": "The microscope parts are being purchased from an EU FET-open grant, CyGenTiG, which is a EUR 5M collaboration between Basel, Edinburgh and Dusseldorf. At the centre of the project is the construction and testing of a novel type of computer-controlled microscope, which can observe cells and direct control signals to them using light. The Dusseldorf team is designing the light-detecting proteins to go in the cells, the Edinburgh team is putting them into cells and making tissues from them, and the two Basel teams are designing and building the custom microscope parts and software (this is already underway). For our cooperative work, it is essential that the microscopes in every one of our labs are exactly the same, which is why we must order an exact copy of the same microscope platform that is already in the Basel laboratory. They will then send us one of the custom-designed special systems they are building for the project, to fit to our microscope (actually, they will come and fit it), again so that each lab has precisely identical apparatus. That we would do this was written into the grant application. After doing their own comparison and procurement exercise, the Basel lab have settled on this Nikon platform, and indeed already have it and are testing their novel, custom made components. That locks our choice to the precise list of components in the attached quotation. For this reason, competition is absent for technical reasons. (SC Ref:586916)",
