Facilitation & Coaching of Landscape-scale Leadership Skills
Notice Description
Soil Association Scotland are inviting experienced coaches, mentors and facilitators to submit proposals to actively develop and deliver an innovative pilot project for building landscape-scale leadership skills for a small group of land managers.
Lot Information
Lot 1
Soil Association Scotland (SAS) along with our partners and other stakeholders, are developing a new programme - Landscape Lab - to empower people to inspire and enable positive change at a landscape scale and deliver impactful environmental, economic and social outcomes. Transforming land management in Scotland will depend on innovative leaders and diverse groups and networks working collaboratively to achieve a shared vision. The purpose of the pilot is to inform a robust model for the delivery of the Landscape Lab's objectives - to be rolled out as a larger scale charged-for programme in 2020. The pilot will use the theory of change approach to achieve its intended outcomes. It will work closely with around ten participants. Each participant will be chosen based on their capacity to make decisions that impact large areas of land and change at a landscape scale. Over the duration of the programme we will create a network and sense of identity between these individuals to motivate change, and to be visible within Scotland's political landscape. Our intention is to run a series of four overnight sessions in different inspirational venues, interspersed with support. Over this time our participants will move from having vague goals and aspirations, identified at recruitment, to a robust Action Plan by the end of the last session. (See Section V1.3 and Appendix 1 for further description.) We are seeking a Programme Facilitator to deliver the pilot. This will involve: Work with SAS to complete the development of programme activities to achieve the short, medium, and long-term pilot outcomes (see Appendix 2 for outcomes), working collaboratively to design the programme and contribute to outreach, general communication and reporting. Work closely with SAS staff and other stakeholders to: - Oversee and run four overnight sessions at inspirational locations throughout the UK with logistical and other support from the staff above, over the course of around 4 months. - Evaluate the sessions in this pilot programme to measure impact and inform future design and development of the programme. - Coach participants in between sessions (via telephone or Skype), focusing on developing their goals and aspirations into an Action Plan with a robust set of actions and milestones. For each participant there will be three coaching sessions: one after the first overnight session, the second after the second overnight session, and the last after the third overnight session. The Programme Facilitator will be responsible for the delivery of the workshops and coaching; and will receive assistance from the SAS Executive Assistant with the logistics of the programme, and the SAS Communications Officer with communications between programme participants. The SAS Deputy Director is accountable for the entire project. The SAS Deputy Director will be consulted on the project, along with the project's steering group. The SAS Deputy Director and SAS Communications officer will be kept informed on completion of key milestones (each overnight session, evaluation, coaching). Facilitation style and approach: we request that when working with participants you: - Explore the concepts of leadership and followership, with an emphasis on network leadership and the leadership of sustainability, as well as collective leadership; - Enable them to frame leadership concepts within the context of their own landscapes; Use an appreciative inquiry approach:- - To enable and empower them to find the solutions that work in their landscapes; - To take a strategic view of their landscapes; - To share their knowledge and experience, identifying gaps; - Focus on group dynamics, creating environments where participants are comfortable to challenge themselves and others; - Are flexible enough to create the space and time to extend important conversations and activities to best achieve the intended outcomes.

"description": "PROPOSED ACTIVITIES We have a great deal of freedom with this project; putting us in a fortunate position of flexibility, which provides space to continually develop the pilot and focus on broader outcomes rather than a narrow set of KPIs. Our intention is to run a series of four overnight sessions in different inspirational venues, interspersed with support. Over this time our participants will move from having vague goals and aspirations, identified at recruitment, to a robust Action Plan by the end of the last session. Please note that the venues are suggestions at this stage: Inspire - Coigach & Assynt This site has been highlighted by many stakeholders as an example of landscape leadership. This session will focus on establishing group dynamics. Influence - Holyrood Parliament There are political barriers to landscape scale change. This location is being used to raise the profile of the programme, and of participants amongst policymakers; and to inform the participants of the wider policy context in Scotland. Innovate - Balcaskie Estate Changing the status quo requires an innovative approach and mindset. Participants will develop this by exploring innovative solutions to problems in their own landscapes. Initiate - Knepp The final session will lay the groundwork for change to be implemented on each participant's landscape. The focus will be on an Action Plans for each participant, where everyone will present their plan to the group for discussion and refinement. This site has made a radical change at a landscape scale, inspiring participants to make change. The activities in these sessions have been designed to achieve the short, interim, and longer-term outcomes we want to see. We have used the ISM theory of change approach to influencing behaviours to inform this; assigning I, S, or M, against our predicted outcomes in the programme's logic model. The programme aims to involve a range of participants that represent the diversity of landscape ownership type in Scotland: private landowners, representatives from community owned land trusts, reserve managers from environmental NGOs and others that could include those managing land owned by the Scottish Government, local authorities, or utility companies. The sessions will include some talks from external experts. These are likely to include: Scottish Land & Estates, civil servants, environmental researchers, and NGOs. We have identified some potential speakers and will work with the facilitator to consider if they are right for the sessions, and what their briefings should be. Communications with identified stakeholders will be carried out by SAS staff. These stakeholders will include policymakers, NGOs, and rural land use representative bodies. NUMBER OF DAYS AND COMMITMENT The number of days required for the Programme Facilitator's activity is to be negotiated. Please advise, as part of your proposal, how many days you anticipate will be required to deliver and achieve the outcomes. The expectation is that this would require around 30 days in total, phased fairly evenly, with some front-loading of activity to finalise and agree the broad activities. The expectation is that the successful facilitator will work with SAS to finalise pilot development at an early stage to ensure the outcomes in the logic model (see Appendix 1) will be met. The expectation is that you will begin engagement with SAS in September, and that the pilot would run from autumn 2019 until spring 2020. An allowance should be made for all expenses, as these will be covered by the programme's budget. Any questions should be submitted todmichie@soilassociation.org. (SC Ref:614241)",
