Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process involves a planned tender by The Common Services Agency (more commonly known as NHS National Services Scotland) for the project titled "NHS Scotland National Distribution Centre Off-Site Storage". This initiative falls within the health industry category and is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. The procurement is currently in the planning stage, with a communication of a future notice set for 20th January 2020. The primary objective is to secure third-party logistics to manage overflow storage and fulfil day-to-day operations for NHS Scotland’s distribution network, which delivers over 80,000 items weekly to healthcare facilities.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in logistics, warehousing, and supply chain management, particularly those with capacity for high-volume and time-sensitive operations. Companies capable of providing storage solutions for large quantities of goods and ensuring fast retrieval and dispatch will be well-suited to compete. Moreover, businesses that can demonstrate experience in managing health-related logistics or emergency storage scenarios, such as pandemic stock management, will be particularly attractive to the NHS as they seek to enhance their operational efficiency and response capabilities.

Notice Title

NHS Scotland National Distribution Centre Off-Site Storage

Notice Description

National Procurement, a division of NHS National Services Scotland, is the Centre of Expertise for Health Procurement established in 2005. We are home to the biggest public sector logistics operation in Scotland. From our Lanarkshire based National Distribution Centre, over 80,000 items are delivered every week to hospital wards, departments and community centres with a 98% on time, first time, in full supply record. We have over 27,000 customers and we make over 1000 trips a month to deliver for them. The distribution centre currently runs near capacity and to meet on-going customer demands we require a third-party logistics to support day-to-day operations. It is envisaged that the third-party logistics supplier would hold around 5,000 pallets of stock and be responsible for picking 10,000 product lines per week. As well as supporting day to day requirements we are also required to store around 3,000 pallets of stock which can be called upon in case of a pandemic situation.
