Notice Description

The National Trust for Scotland, wishes to appoint suppliers for the Provision of Rhododendron Control at Brodie Castle and Brodick Country Park

Lot Information

Brodie Castle

Rhododendron ponticum is a highly invasive species that has spread out from areas historically planted on the Brodie estate. The spread of R.ponticum is threatening the marginal pond habitat, water quality and and also the natural biodiversity with in the woodland. The mature bushed planted around the pond have been stem treated and the dead wood removed by chipping. Some the bushes have been cut but not treated with herbicide and regrowth is occurring. Other than the pond margins rhododendron bushes are spread sporadically around the woodland in the areas indicated by the map. Some of these have been treated with stem treatment and a small area controlled by a physical 'lever and mulch' method. Tenders are invited to control the remaining bushes in the mapped area after a site visit with NTS staff. Contractors should have satisfied themselves that they are aware of the specification and work required. The specification shall include information, discussions and instruction made by the Supervisory Officer on the site visit. Contractors are responsible to ensure that they have all necessary information for successful completion of the contract.

Brodick Country Park & Goatfell

Rhododendron ponticum is a highly invasive non-native species (INNS) which has colonised semi-natural woodland and moorland areas at Brodick Country Park and on the Goatfell estate. The plant was introduced to Brodick Castle Gardens as an ornamental species during Victorian times, when it was also planted in shelter belts and as game cover on the wider estate. Over time, Rhododendron ponticum has spread from these original plantings, infesting semi-natural woodland and open moorland habitat, threatening these areas' biodiversity. There is concern that Phytophthora kernoviae (or P. ramorum, currently present on the island) may return to the grounds and threaten the health of native as well as horticultural trees and shrubs, emphasising the high importance of controlling rhododendron, one of its main host species, in the wider estate. The areas affected by Rhododendron ponticum on the adjacent Goatfell estate, are part of the Arran Moors Special Protected Area (SPA) and the Arran Moors Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), both of which include breeding hen harrier Circus cyaneus as their notified features. In addition, the SSSI aims to protect upland habitats and its associated breeding bird assemblage. Encroachment by INNS is noted as a negative pressure on both designated areas.
