Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has awarded a contract for the procurement of a Stellaris Confocal Microscope, designated NCA30941. This tender falls within the Education and Medical Research industries and is located in Edinburgh, UK. The procurement process commenced with a limited award procedure without prior publication, leading to the contract's finalisation on 20 November 2020. The awarded contract, with a total value of £418,645, aims to replace an obsolete SP5 system and enhance capabilities in medical research environments.

This contract presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in scientific equipment and medical technology, particularly those that focus on high-precision microscopy solutions. Companies capable of providing bespoke optical setups and technical support for complex instruments would be particularly well-suited to engage with such tenders. Notably, the absence of bids from small or foreign entities suggests a potential market gap, indicating that there may be room for new entrants to compete in future procurement opportunities of this nature.

Notice Title

NCA30941 Stellaris Confocal Microscope

Notice Description

The Leica Stellaris has been specified to replace and improve upon the capabilities the SP5 has. The FCS equipment, which was supplied by Leica, will move onto the Stellaris as will the super-z Galvo stage for precise positioning in the Z axis. We will also be reusing some of the objectives from the SP5 set up on the Stellaris

Lot Information

Lot 1

The Leica Stellaris is a state of the art new confocal launched by Leica in July 2020. This model supersedes its predecessor the SP8. The AIR were given a Leica SP5 by the ECRC in 2014. The Leica SP5 system has been in use in the IGMM since 2007 (7 years in the ECRC and 6 years in AIR) and is now 13 years old. In January 2020 Leica informed the AIR that the SP5 was now obsolete and we could only renew our service contract with a best endeavour service contract. Here we are replacing the now obsolete Leica SP5 with the newest confocal model Leica can offer, Stellaris. Leica will breakdown the existing SP5, maximising sustainability by reusing identified parts, already defined, and scrap remaining parts at no cost to the University

Procurement Information

The software Stellaris uses, the Leica Application Suite, is the same as the software which is on the SP5. The work cannot be done on other facility microscopes and requires the bespoke optical set up the Leica system can offer.
