Notice Title

Tree decay detection instruments

Notice Description

The RBGE collection has trees with important historic value. Some specimens are extremely rare both in private collections and in their native habitats. Striking the balance between the conservation of the collection and visitor safety is of paramount importance. As the trees age, removal on the grounds of Health and Safety is not always in the best interests of the collection. Tree decay detection instruments would make possible the collection of data that would allow assessment of decay and inform management decisions. Risk assessment of trees with decay will become more data driven and better implementation of controls will allow these valuable trees to continue contributing to the collection. Better tree failure prediction will also improve visitor safety, and offer us new solutions to monitoring the impact of diseases in the collection. The instruments would be utilised by all four gardens.

Lot Information

Electronic high-resolution needle drill resistance measurement device

Lot1 - Electronic high-resolution needle drill resistance measurement device: Suitable for inspecting hardwood and softwood trees and timber in order to find internal defects, and to determine wood density. The instrument should have a drilling depth of at least 50cm, produce a graphical output of the measurements as a digital file, be easily portable, software which support the usage the instrument.

A Sonic Tomograph system: Suitable for cross-sectional analysis of trees with wood decay

Lot 2- A Sonic Tomograph system: Suitable for cross-sectional analysis of trees with wood decay. The Tomograph system should be supplied with 12 sensors and compatible digital callipers that allow the cross-sectional geometry to be measured and considered, evaluation software, and a carrying case. Software for the operation of the instrument, should have the capability to interpolate and graphically represent a 3D model from multiple cross-sectional readings.
