Notice Title

Award of 701_0776 Flanders Moss New Road and Maintenance Works

Notice Description

Forestry and Land Scotland have a commitment, supported by the Scottish Government, to return a proportion of degraded peatland under their ownership to restored peatland. Historic timber planting and felling operations have degraded the peatland which is being increasingly recognised to have significant carbon capture benefits. The plan is to fell and extract timber crops and undertake a number of remedial works to restore the peatland to maximise its carbon capture potential and ecological benefit. Coupes 26001 and 26002 at Flanders Moss are located on one of these areas of degraded peatland and thus have been earmarked for restoration by the planning team. There is currently no suitable access to the coupe from the existing forestry road for timber haulage lorries and therefore new forestry road construction and existing forestry road maintenance is necessary. Upon completion of these works, the new road construction will serve access to the coupe and other adjacent coupes for other forestry operations as necessary. The roadline has been set out by an experienced civil engineer in accordance with the Forestry and Land Scotland Civil Engineering Handbook and has taken account of environmental impacts, visual impacts, geology and available resources.
