Notice Title

Site Condition Monitoring Survey of dunlin, golden plover and greenshank and other birds on Caithness and Sutherland Peatlands Special Protection Area (SPA)

Notice Description

We require experienced bird surveyors to survey dunlin, golden plover and greenshank within approximately 30 pre-determined monitoring plots within Caithness and Sutherland Peatlands SPA using the Brown & Shepherd method (see Brown & Shepherd 1993. A method for censusing upland breeding waders. Bird Study, 40, 189-195). Additionally, surveyors should record breeding evidence for other upland birds seen within the SPA during survey work. Each monitoring plot requires 2 survey visits (first visit in mid-April to mid-May; second visit in June). Survey plots are 6-9 km square. Surveys will be carried out in favourable weather between 08.30 and 18.00 BST. Two surveyors are needed per plot visit to allow time to walk to/from the plot as well as do the survey work within the time period specified by the survey method. Approximately 120 person-days of survey work are required. A team of at least 4 suitably experienced surveyors is needed for this work to allow for rest days and days when the weather is not suitable for survey work. Dunlin, golden plover and greenshank observations within survey plots are to be presented as locations on detailed maps of the survey plots. Observations of other uplands birds, together with any breeding evidence (BTO codes), are to be presented in a spreadsheet. Analysis of the data will be carried out by NatureScot staff. We would prefer to let the entire contract to one team of surveyors, but we will consider tenders for part of the contract (eg for both visits to 15 of the plots).
