Heidelberg SPECTRALIS OCT

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

This public procurement record has 1 release in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The University Of Edinburgh has awarded a contract for the procurement of the Heidelberg SPECTRALIS OCT to Heidelberg Engineering Ltd. The contract, with an approximate value of £120,000, was signed on 3rd May 2024. The procurement process was driven by the desire to purchase a spectral domain OCT unit for use in research, teaching, and clinical settings at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies located in Edinburgh, UK.

This tender for the Heidelberg SPECTRALIS OCT offers significant opportunities for businesses involved in the goods category, particularly those with expertise in supplying specialised equipment for research and clinical use. The University Of Edinburgh's specific requirements for this state-of-the-art OCT unit create a niche market opportunity for suppliers in the healthcare and veterinary industries. Businesses capable of providing advanced imaging technology solutions tailored to specific research needs will be well-suited to compete in this procurement process.

Procurement Information

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies has received funding to purchase a spectral domain OCT unit which will be used across campus in research, teaching and clinical settings. The equipment selected is Heidelberg Engineering's Sprectralis OCT with the flex module as it's the only unit that meets the end users' requirements. The flex module offers flexibility compared to other devices on the market due to its imaging unit mounted to a moveable arm. Other systems on the market are operating microscopes with an OCT built in which only allows for scanning during operations in a theatre and are primarily designed for people - where the head is brought to the machine and placed on a chin rest. The Heidelberg Spectralis Flex is unique in its use in the Veterinary world. It was designed for patients who could not use a conventional, table-mounted system and therefore is suitable for veterinary species under general anaesthesia, or in calm, well-restrained patients on an examination table where their long noses would preclude a table-mounted device. Other systems available on the market would severely impact and affect the neurodegenerative research where the retina is affected, and characterising posterior segment changes in natural tuberculosis infections due to the system limitations noted above. Both of the research areas offer huge potential translational impacts, and the system would considerably increase the research capabilities of the facilities.
