UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

This public procurement record has 1 release in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has completed a procurement process for "Reagent Kits, Wash Buffers and Solid Resources" for its UK Dementia Research Institute (UK-DRI) located at the BioQuarter, Edinburgh. This procurement, classified under the education sector, followed a non-competitive action procedure without prior publication due to the specific requirements of the Simoa HD-X Analyzer, which was previously acquired from Quanterix Corporation. The contract was awarded to Quanterix with a value of £98,271 and signed on the 7th of August, 2024. The procurement aimed to acquire essential consumables necessary for ongoing clinical trials, including trials focused on neurodegenerative diseases.

This tender offers significant opportunities for businesses, particularly those involved in supplying highly specialised laboratory consumables and equipment. Companies with expertise and capacity to meet precise research specifications would find this environment beneficial for growth, mainly if they can form strategic partnerships or supply agreements with research institutions like UK-DRI. Moreover, large-scale suppliers of scientific materials who can ensure sustainable bulk delivery could be particularly well-suited to compete for similar contracts in the future.

Lot Information

Lot 1

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK-DRI) is a national institute with 7 centres across the UK, one of which is based at The University of Edinburgh, Bio Quarter. The UK-DRI brings together both discovery research and translational research to better understand neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Motor Neuron Disease and to identify disease modifying therapies. The Simoa HD-X Analyzer from Quanterix Corporation (located at the UK-DRI in Edinburgh) is a fully automated instrument that performs digital ELISA immunoassays at unprecedented levels of sensitivity. This system was purchased under a Non-Competitive Action (Contract Award NOV400699) in November 2020 and commissioned in April 2021. To operate effectively, the Simoa HD-X Analyzer requires specific System Fluid Resources (Wash Buffers and System Sealing Oil), System Solid Resources (cuvettes, pipette tips, Simoa array discs, 96-well plates and plate seals) and biomarker specific Advantage PLUS Reagent Kits. Quanterix Corporation is the ONLY manufacturer and supplier of these items. The UK-DRI/UoE therefore are procuring the Neurology 2-Plex B (NFL/GFAP) Advantage PLUS Reagent Kits, Wash Buffers and Solid Resources, from Quanterix Corporation, that are required to measure the serum concentrations of NFL and GFAP in 1088 participants of the MND-SMART clinical trial.. n/a

Procurement Information

This Contract Award is to purchase consumables in bulk to support the operation of The Simoa HD-X Analyzer from Quanterix Corporation (located at the UK Dementia Research Institute in The University of Edinburgh, Bio-Quarter). Only consumables from Quanterix can be used on the Analyser already in operation and purchased from Quanterix since April 2021 for these clinical trials. Consumables are being purchased in bulk to support sustainability and value add.
