Summary of the contracting process

The Common Services Agency, commonly known as NHS National Services Scotland (NSS), located in Edinburgh, has completed the procurement process for the NP67524 Neurosurgery framework. This framework encompasses numerous neurosurgical consumables and specialised products, divided into nine lots including items like Neurosurgical Drill Nose Cones & Burrs, Dural Sealant and Applicator, and various others. The procurement was carried out through an open procedure and caters primarily to the health sector within the UKM region. The contracts were signed on 29 August 2024, following the award stage, which was concluded on 3 September 2024.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in the medical supplies and neurosurgery sector to provide specialised consumables to NHS facilities. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) such as Delta Surgical Ltd, Integra NeuroSciences Limited, and Medtronic Limited were among the suppliers awarded, reflecting the inclusivity of smaller businesses. Companies that excel in producing high-quality neurosurgical components and offering comprehensive training and support services stand to benefit greatly from participating in similar NHS frameworks, fostering long-term growth and establishing strong sectoral footholds.

Lot Information

Dural Sealant and applicator

A Dural sealant is designed to facilitate watertight closure of an intact Dura. This can be used alongside other methods of Dural repair such as sutures. Dural Sealant is used in high leak-risk areas. A Dural sealant needs to be strongly adherent and resist physiological pressure.

Neurosurgical Drill Nose cones & Burrs

A drill nose cone should fit onto a generic high speed surgical drill. Different cutting burrs can be attached to the drill via the nose cone. The cutting burrs must be single use and single pack.

Dural Substitute

Dural substitute is a synthetic or animal derived replacement for the Dura and is used when Dural tissue is missing or inadequate. This Dural substitute is designed to facilitate a watertight closure. A Dural substitute needs to be able to bridge gaps and regenerate Dural tissue.

CSF Drainage Catheters inc. Drainage Collection Bags

A catheter used for CSF management and disorders of CSF flow, including the collection bag. This product needs to be antibiotic impregnated.

Shunt Valves

Shunt valves allow a fixed amount of CSF drainage. A programmable shunt valve provides the option of changing the opening pressure of the valve. An important tool in hydrocephalus, especially in complex cases such as paediatric cases.

Cranial Burrhole Plates and Screws

A screw and plate fixation system for bone (cranial or spinal). The screws need to be low profile so that they are not visible through the skin.

Skull Pins

Skull pins are used for cranial stabilisation, inserted in the skull clamp to fixate the patient's head during surgery. The skull pins need to fit the Mayfield (this is the skull clamp).

Aneurysm Clips & Clip Applicators

An aneurysm clip is a small metallic clip that fits alongside the neck of an aneurysm to prevent blood from entering. The clip stays permanently clamped on the aneurysm. Each clip is applied with a compatible applicator that preserves the closing force of the clip. The clips should be MRI compatible.

Raney Clips & Clip Applicators

Raney Clips are used to prevent wound bleeding after incision for craniotomy. They must be east to apply, whilst still maintaining haemostasis. (single Use).
