Strand Burner

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

This public procurement record has 1 release in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has completed the procurement process to acquire a pellet/strand burner, specifically to support the Pulham Group's research on the performance of ballistic modifiers in solid rocket propellant compositions. This contract was awarded on the 27th of January, 2025 to OZM Research s.r.o., a large supplier based in the Czech Republic, for a total value of €82,979.75. The procurement method utilised was a limited award procedure without prior publication due to technical reasons and the absence of competition. The contract falls under the industry category of education and is located in the region of UKM75, Edinburgh.

This procurement represents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in scientific instrumentation, particularly those capable of supplying advanced research equipment. Suppliers of laboratory and experimental devices, especially firms that offer specialised burners for propellant testing, would find this tender particularly relevant. Companies that align with the technical demands and can replicate key instrumentation for educational institutions, like universities conducting high-level research, are well-positioned to compete in similar tenders in the future.

Notice Title

Strand Burner

Notice Description

The Pulham Group specialises in studying the structure and properties of materials under various conditions, typically extremes of pressure and temperature. The overall objective is to determine how changes in structure or composition influence the resulting properties of the materials--be that their thermochemical balance, energetic sensitivity and performance, or suitability for use in car engines--to influence the design of better heat storage materials, safer explosives and propellants, or more efficient biofuels. As part of their ongoing research, the Pulham Group intends to procure a pellet/strand burner to investigate the performance of ballistic modifiers on the burn rate performance of solid rocket propellant compositions. A pellet/strand burner is required to measure the burn rate pressure profile which can show the performance of burn rate modifiers. Funding was awarded for this project to investigate alternatives to lead-based ballistic modifiers

To evaluate ballistic modifiers, the change in burn rate with pressure must be measured with a Crawford burner. A Crawford burner is a device used to test the burn rate of solid propellants. It can take the form of a pellet or strand burner.

Procurement Information

The Pulham Group is looking to procure a pellet burner to investigate the performance of ballistic modifiers on the burn rate performance of solid rocket propellant compositions. A pellet or strand burner is required to measure the burn rate pressure profile which can show the performance of burn rate modifiers. The funding for this project was awarded to investigate alternatives to the lead-based ballistic modifiers. To evaluate ballistic modifiers, the change in burn rate with pressure must be measured with a Crawford burner. This can take the form of a pellet or strand burner. The supplier selected is the only commercial supplier of this instrumentation. The pellet burner is the most cost-effective option in the supplier's range whilst also having the capability to test the relevant pressure ranges to observe the onset of the key burn-rate plateau. Buying a commercial of the shelf instrument is key to the reproducibility of these results especially as this instrument will form the basis for propellant characterisation at the University of Edinburgh. Therefore, the only other option would be to develop and produce such instrumentation which is not feasible and would also impede reproducibility of results between collaborators and industry partners.
