Notice Title

Purchase of a Materials Testing System

Notice Description

Materials Testing System

Lot Information

Lot 1

A Table Mounted Materials Testing System is designed to test the mechanical properties of materials--like tensile strength, compression strength, flexural behaviour, or hardness. It is used to evaluate how materials behave under different loads. Having the axial and torsional axes coupled in one frame is essential for this research: it eliminates inter-machine variability, avoids alignment and fixturing inconsistencies that would arise from chaining separate instruments, ensures synchronized control and common metrology for traceable results, and preserves the integrity of combined-load failure and characterization tests.

Procurement Information

The School of Engineering required the purchase of the Instron Model 68MT-5 Table Mounted Materials Testing System in support of the research into meta-material adhesives for improved performance and functionalisation of bondlines. Instron's proposal is the only offering that delivers an integrated table-mounted 5 kN frame, a biaxial transducer with the required axial/rotational capacities, and a compatible torsion actuator 25Nm -- together with traceable load-cell calibration, the required test-control/software functionality, on-site commissioning and user training -- in a single, synchronized system. No other supplier demonstrated the combined tension-compression + torsion capability (including the exact torque limits, angular resolution and software/test-profiler support) that the research protocol requires. For this reason, this purchase was made directly with Instron via an NCA.
