The Education Scotland Azure Tenant currently hosts multiple subscriptions with a range of virtual resources deployed to support various applications. Most of these resources have reached end of life or are no longer required. Due to limited ongoing support and the absence of a formal decommissioning process, this has resulted in unnecessary costs, potential security vulnerabilities, and increased risk exposure. Following TDA and DMG approval it was agreed these issues can be mitigated through a targeted clean-up and rationalisation of unused or obsolete resources.

As there has been different suppliers managing, it has led to the retention of historical data, creating potential GDPR compliance risks, alongside insufficient documentation, and a lack of in-house capability to securely support or recover services. The environment is also incurring avoidable costs of up to 10000 GBP per annum through unused resources. Planned decommissioning will rationalise the tenant while retaining essential services, including the PLL Catalogue and Azure DevOps, as ratified by CDS and the relevant MDT.
