UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

This public procurement record has 1 release in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has completed the procurement process for an Electron Probe Microanalyzer, intended to replace an existing instrument used by the School of Geosciences since 2002. The procurement falls under the Education category and involved an open procedure as part of the High Value Lab Equipment Framework (HVLE), Lot 3 LAB3162NW. The contract was awarded to JEOL (UK) Ltd, a large supplier based in Welwyn Garden City. Initially offered in November 2024, the contract was signed on 7th July 2025, valued at £1,117,045, with an option to extend service and support for two additional years, totalling eight years of agreement.

This tender offers significant opportunities for businesses specialising in scientific equipment manufacturing and supply, particularly those that can deliver high-value laboratory equipment. Companies with expertise in electron microanalysis technology are well-suited to compete in similar tenders, as high technical precision and reliability are critical. Participation in the HVLE framework positions suppliers to attract further business from educational and research institutions, bolstering their presence in key markets within the United Kingdom.

Notice Title

Electron Probe Microanalyzer

Notice Description

An Electron Probe Microanalyser is a device used to analyse materials at micron scale. It works by firing a beam of electrons at the substance, these electrons cause x-rays to be emitted from the substance, and that characteristic emission can be measured by detectors or generates analytical imaging substance composition. The school of Geosciences is seeking to purchase a new one of these systems. This will be a direct replacement for an existing instrument which has been in-situ since August 2002.
