Liquid Handling System, Incubators & Extended Warranty

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

This public procurement record has 1 release in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has completed the procurement process for a "Liquid Handling System, Incubators & Extended Warranty" to enhance the Edinburgh Genome Foundry's capabilities. This procurement falls under the education sector, with a focus on high-level automation to support genetic research. The contract, worth approximately £771,486.72, was awarded to Beckman Coulter UK Ltd. The procurement method was limited, attributed to the technical requirements that only the chosen supplier could meet, ensuring seamless integration with existing laboratory equipment. The procurement stage is now in the award phase, with the contracts being signed on 17th June 2026. The purchase is strategically aligned with the University's expansion plans for its facilities in Edinburgh, UKM75 region, and involves complex integrative equipment crucial for the facility's mission.

This tender creates significant opportunities for businesses specialising in advanced laboratory equipment and automation technology, particularly those capable of addressing bespoke technical specifications and integration needs. Companies that design specialised lab automation systems or provide essential components for high-level research facilities would be highly suited to competing in such procurements. The focus on customised, integrative solutions for laboratory automation presents opportunities for innovation and closer collaborations with research institutions, opening pathways for growth in the scientific and educational sectors.

Notice Title

Liquid Handling System, Incubators & Extended Warranty

Notice Description

The Edinburgh Genome Foundry (EGF) is a unique facility specialising in the generation of large numbers of genetic constructs to equip cells with new or improved functionality. As a Small Research Facility (SRF) at the School of Biological Sciences (SBS), the aim is to support the research of multiple academics who leverage EGF's unique capabilities to accelerate the discovery process and generate solutions that address global challenges. To deliver its mission, EGF heavily relies on high-level automation. This procurement relates to the purchase of a Liquid Handling System, an automated incubator, software, associated parts and an extended warranty that will be built into the automated platform.

Procurement Information

The facility is undergoing major expansion to incorporate a fully automated platform for the automated handling of mammalian cells. For different pieces of kit to be integrated into such an automated platform, they need to be designed especially for this purpose. Furthermore, the platform needs to be designed in such a way that it can be fitted in the limited space of EGF. The supplier can implement the fully automated platform and is the manufacturer of the liquid handler being proposed on this purchase, as well as the acoustic dispensers, which are already existing pieces of kit in EGF. These have been designed to optimally integrate with the supplier's scheduler and give end users full access to the capabilities of these instruments. For the acoustic dispensers specifically, the supplier is the only supplier which can offer this level of integration. The liquid handler being proposed has unique and key characteristics that are important for the end users and the research the facility carries out. These are integrated cameras/deck optics. A light curtain, which is an active safety barrier based on an invisible infrared light beam which once crossed, stops all movements immediately of the different robotic arms to protect the operator. Lastly, it has 2 independent grippers (360-degree rotating) that offer additional functionalities and flexibility during workflows that are necessary for the end users to deliver their projects. The selected supplier provides the EGF with seamless integration between the selected liquid handler, the already in place acoustic dispensers and the scheduling software. The selected supplier is also providing laboratory automation software in this purchase and has the ability to integrate this into the entire system. This is a specialised lab automation accessory that enables the operator to tilt/shake multi-well plates on multiple axis. This is a key feature that is essential for the handling of mammalian cells (especially when working with viral vectors, spheroids and organoids). In addition, the chosen enclosure supplier (separate procurement) has worked extensively with the selected supplier and offers unique solutions for the integration of the supplier's liquid handler and acoustic dispenser.
