Summary of the contracting process

De Montfort University is seeking bids for the design and development of a needle biopsy device under an open procurement process, with the tender currently in the planning stage. The tender was published on 4th March 2019 and is set to close on 6th March 2019. The contract period is expected to commence on 12th March 2019 and run until 13th March 2020. This opportunity falls within the specialty design services category, specifically targeting the medical sector in the East Midlands region of the United Kingdom.

This tender presents an exciting opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with expertise in medical device design and development, particularly those interested in innovative technologies for healthcare. Companies capable of contributing to the refinement and production of manual biopsy devices would be particularly well-suited to compete, as the project requires design solutions that operate without electricity, adhering to the specifications of the SME partner company, Olberon Ltd. Firms involved in biomedical engineering, product design, and medical manufacturing may find significant potential for collaboration or provision of services in response to this contract.

Notice Title

1233 Design and Development of a Needle Biopsy Device

Notice Description

De Montfort University (DMU) invites bids from suitably experienced providers for the development of a biopsy device. The SME Partner Company (Olberon Ltd) have developed a prototype vibrating needle biopsy device that uses the mechanism from a wind-up torch. The prototype device has a handle with a trigger that is gripped fully with a power grip (i.e. pistol grip) with the spring-loaded trigger being operated by the fingers. Olberon would like to build on the research in this area by developing and launching a vibrating biopsy device product. The device should be manually operated for both capturing the sample and deploying the vibration (i.e. no electricity should be used). No formal size dimensions have been specified, but it is understood that the hardware for the device should be similar in size to existing biopsy units on the market.
