Summary of the contracting process

The Ministry of Defence, DE&S ISTAR Windfarm Team is seeking solutions through a selective tender titled "Paper-based Feasibility study and possible future Demonstration of Mature Solutions for Improving Air Surveillance for the Purposes of Air Defence in Airspace affected by Wind Farms," published on 9 December 2019. This procurement falls within the radar apparatus industry, specifically addressing challenges posed by wind farms on military air defence operations in the South West region of the United Kingdom. The tender period ends on 31 January 2020, and the contract is expected to commence on 18 February 2020, running until 31 March 2021. The estimated value of the contract is £1,000,000, reflecting the importance of this initiative to enhance air surveillance capabilities.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses engaged in radar, air defence solutions, and related services, particularly those with expertise in mitigating the impacts of wind turbine developments on military operations. Companies focused on technological innovations in radar apparatus or those that can demonstrate effective solutions for air surveillance in wind-affected areas will be well-positioned to compete. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate in this procurement process, as there may be potential for collaboration and innovation in developing effective solutions for the MOD's air defence needs.

Notice Title

Paper-based Feasibility study and possible future Demonstration of Mature Solutions for Improving Air Surveillance for the Purposes of Air Defence in Airspace affected by Wind Farms

Notice Description

Wind turbines can adversely affect a number of MOD operations including radars, seismological recording equipment, communications facilities, naval operations and low flying. These effects are not limited to specific geographical areas. The size of wind turbines as well as the geographical footprint of the next generation of wind farm developments are expected to grow significantly and exacerbate the challenges posed to the UK's AD infrastructure. A solution is required to enable the continued operation of military AD surveillance capability in the presence of current and future wind turbine developments.
