Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh has awarded a contract for the provision of a High-power X-Ray Irradiator for dense 3D structures including organoids and mini brain systems. The procurement process concluded with a limited procurement method, negotiated without publication of a contract notice. The University required this equipment due to extreme urgency brought about by unforeseeable events, with an emphasis on conducting genome stability/DNA damage experiments. The contract was awarded to Xstrahl Ltd, with a total value of £65,982, signed on 1st November 2022.

This tender presents business growth opportunities for suppliers of laboratory, optical, and precision equipment. Companies specialising in X-ray devices and related technologies could engage in similar procurement processes. The project location is the Western General Hospital campus in UKM75, offering a specific business niche for providers of high-tech medical equipment. The successful completion of this tender can enhance research capabilities in the field of cancer studies and genetic experiments, aligning with the University's status as a major cancer research centre.

Notice Title

High-power X-Ray Irradiator for dense 3D structures including organoids and mini brain systems

Notice Description

High-power X-Ray Cabinet Irradiator for use in more dense 3D structures, including organoids and "mini brain" systems

Lot Information

Lot 1

Purchase of an X-Ray Cabinet irradiator to carry out genome stability/DNA damage experiments utilizing ionising radiation.

Procurement Information

There is a time limitation added to the procurement due to the terms of funding given that currently means we are unable to complete a competitive process as if we were to undertake a competitive process we the funding would be forfeit The University's Institute of Genetics and Cancer as a major cancer research centre requires the ability to carry out genome stability/DNA damage experiments utilising ionising radiation. The critical benefit of the proposed machine is the higher energy system (160V) and tube power (1000W) which enables better penetration and dose distribution in more dense 3D structures, including organoids and "mini brain" systems. These complex structures representing human tissue, contain a much more accurate cell environment than mono layers of cells and examining their response to damage will be very beneficial to science in the Unit.
