Summary of the contracting process

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), based in Oxfordshire at the Culham Science Centre, is in the planning stage of a tender titled "Fusionics Components Development." This procurement falls under the services category and targets the development of real-time software and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) engineering capabilities for fusion power plant control systems. This initiative aims to address a supply chain gap by developing components for advanced real-time control and instrumentation systems. A preliminary market engagement notice was published on 27th June 2025, and a milestone involving public access to procurement documents is scheduled to complete by 1st August 2025. The process is mainly online, with a forthcoming webinar set for 8th July 2025.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in real-time operating system software packages, electronic integrated circuits, and research and development services. Companies capable of delivering advanced engineering methods, particularly those with a focus on creating ecosystems of interoperable components, would find this opportunity conducive to growth, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) equipped for innovation in the technology sector. With a contract valued at approximately £715,000 to £858,000, and a procurement process that is above-threshold, participants can expect substantial potential returns along with the opportunity to contribute to the UKAEA’s Fusion Futures Programme.

Notice Title

Fusionics Components Development

Notice Description

UKAEA wishes to engage with potential suppliers, for the provision of real-time software and FPGA engineers in order to develop new capabilities to enable fusion power plant control systems. Plasma control systems need advanced real-time control and instrumentation systems. There is a gap in the supply chain in this area. Our vision is to stimulate the creation of an ecosystem of interoperable comments with standard interfaces, protocols and engineering methods. We call this "fusionics", analogous to "avionics" capability as found in aerospace. Building on a successful project as part of year one of the Fusion Futures Programme, we seek a supplier to develop components, skills and capability relevant to this area. After the engagement exercise, UKAEA intend to issue an Invitation to Tender through the EU Supply and Find a Tender (CDP) portals The P172 Realtime Fusionics Components Webinar is scheduled to take place on 8th July 2025 at 1pm.
