Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process managed by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, supported by the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership and Velindre University NHS Trust, aimed to acquire High Throughput Sonication Systems (Covaris) alongside associated consumables and maintenance. Initially, this tender, titled "Purchase of High Throughput Sonication Systems (Covaris) including Associated Consumables and Maintenance", targeted enhancing services for the All Wales Genomics Service and expanding somatic cancer testing capacity. The contract, although awarded through a direct procurement method to Covaris due to its proprietary Adaptive Focused Acoustics technology, was recently revised, ending the equipment purchase component as of 1st September 2025. The focus is now solely on consumables and maintenance, signifying a strategic retargeting within the life sciences and medical equipment sector in Cardiff, Wales (UKL22 region).

This tender, particularly aimed at businesses capable of delivering advanced medical consumables and maintenance for high-throughput sonication systems, offered substantial business growth opportunities. By covering essential consumables for a three-year period with additional extension possibilities, smaller firms in the medical consumables industry could leverage this contract for sustained revenue growth and technology partnerships. Companies with expertise in maintenance and service provision within genomics and cancer diagnostics would find this contract especially beneficial, considering the specific technological requirements and the long-term nature of the supply agreement in the burgeoning field of precision medicine in the UK.
