Summary of the contracting process

The University of York issued a procurement process, titled "High spectroscopic quality scintillation crystals," under an open procedure to acquire CeBr3 scintillation crystals for radiation detection. Located in York, UK, the university engaged in this process to support their Nuclear Physics Group's research initiatives, notably the HYPATIA collaboration meant to upgrade the DALI2+ gamma-ray spectrometer in Japan. The procurement relates to the public authority and sub-central government sector, with the delivery address also within the United Kingdom region UKE21. This contract, awarded on the 7th of July 2026, signifies the completion stage of the procurement process following the tender period that concluded on 27 January 2026.

This contract offers significant business growth opportunities for suppliers specializing in advanced materials and apparatus for measuring radiation, such as scintillation crystals. The contract, valued at £410,000, extends from June 2026 to June 2028, with an option for a 12-month renewal. Large companies like Hellma Materials GmbH have successfully competed in this arena, but upcoming tenders may appeal to SMEs and other suppliers capable of providing high-quality, innovative solutions in spectroscopic equipment and research development support. Such opportunities are particularly suitable for those looking to enhance their standing within the scientific and public sector markets.

Notice Title

High spectroscopic quality scintillation crystals

Notice Description

Provision of high spectroscopic quality CeBr3 scintillation crystals for radiation detection. The Nuclear Physics Group at the University of York has an active research programme using scintillator detectors. One research programme where the York Nuclear Physics group is leading the efforts is the HYPATIA (HYbrid Photon detector Array To Investigate Atomic nuclei) collaboration. The HYPATIA array has been proposed as an upgrade to the highly successful DALI2+ gamma-ray spectrometer - based on NaI(Tl) scintillators - at the RIBF facility in RIKEN, Japan. HYPATIA is well suited for in-beam gamma-ray experiments for slowed-down and fast rare-isotope beams at the RIBF and will be composed of about one thousand scintillation crystals (CeBr3 and GaGG(HR)).
