Summary of the contracting process

The Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, trading as Nexus, is in the planning stage for their Metro Assets Renewals Programme. This project aims to update and maintain the Tyne and Wear Metro network in Newcastle upon Tyne, with Nexus serving as the buyer. The programme, which has been ongoing since 2010, includes activities such as track renewals, station refurbishment, and overhead line replacement, and is set to span until 2032. A significant preliminary market engagement event is scheduled, with potential suppliers invited to confirm their interest and register by 10th July 2026. This event, organised in partnership with the Rail Industry Association, will take place on 14th July 2026 and will cover a range of light rail opportunities, including detailed presentations and workshops. Suppliers interested in future involvement can indicate their interest even if they are not attending the event by contacting Nexus directly.

This tender provides substantial opportunities for business growth, particularly for companies experienced in railways traffic-control, signalling equipment, and railway-track construction. Companies specialising in railway station construction work, overhead line construction, and signalling equipment installation would find this opportunity particularly relevant. Given the comprehensive scope of works, businesses offering repair, maintenance, and associated services related to railways stand to benefit significantly. The engagement with Nexus offers an excellent opportunity to be part of an evolving project likely to yield diverse and ongoing projects well into the next decade. Businesses that engage early may gain a competitive edge in understanding Nexus's requirements and aligning their offerings accordingly.
