Summary of the contracting process

Cell Therapy Catapult Limited procured Alternating Tangential Flow (ATF) non-GMP equipment for CGTC Braintree. The equipment supports process development activities that will later transfer to GMP manufacturing as part of the Ena Biologics BMIC Project. The requirement covers biomedical equipment and associated repair and maintenance services, including a one-year equipment warranty and the potential for further servicing. The system is intended to provide single-use ATF-style perfusion for laboratory process development and to connect with Thermo Fisher Dynadrive bioreactors. Delivery and use are associated with Braintree, while the buyer is based in London. This is a specialist life sciences equipment requirement for organisations supplying bioprocessing, cell therapy or pharmaceutical manufacturing development systems.

This procurement is complete and was awarded through a direct award to Repligen B.V. The award date was 22 July 2026, with a gross value of €345,878.40 including VAT; the net value is €288,232. The contract period runs from 13 October 2026 to 12 October 2027, with a maximum extension date of 12 October 2028. The award covers one lot and includes an option to buy a one-year service contract after the warranty period, as well as spare parts for equipment maintenance. The buyer used a direct award on technical grounds, stating that Repligen was the only supplier of GMP perfusion equipment using alternating tangential flow suitable for the intended cleanroom and process requirements. The award evaluation therefore centred on technical compatibility and performance.

This outcome identifies a narrowly specialised requirement for suppliers with proven expertise in alternating tangential flow perfusion and single-use bioprocessing equipment. A credible future competitor would need to supply non-GMP laboratory systems that can support development work transferring into GMP manufacturing, while maintaining compatibility with Thermo Fisher Dynadrive bioreactors. Relevant capability includes biomedical equipment supply, equipment warranty support, spare-parts provision and maintenance services. Experience in cell therapy, biologics or pharmaceutical process development would help demonstrate understanding of the operating environment and the need for process intensity and cost-of-goods performance. Suppliers offering alternative tangential flow or acoustic systems would need strong evidence that their equipment can deliver comparable perfusion performance and integrate with established bioprocessing infrastructure without extensive re-engineering.

Notice Title

Purchase of Alternating Tangential Flow (ATF) Non-GMP Equipment

Notice Description

CGTC Braintree plans to procure Non-GMP Alternating Tangential Flow (ATF) equipment to support process development activities that will subsequently be transferred to GMP manufacturing. The procurement includes a one year equipment warranty and the option to enter into an additional one-year service contract. The total value of the procurement is EUR345,878.40 (including VAT). The contract is expected to commence on 31 July 2026.

Procurement Information

This purchase is for a lab base non-GMP system, but it is required to support the development of the process that will be transferred to GMP Manufacturing as part of the Ena Biologics BMIC Project (Ena Project). A Repligen system will be used in GMP Manufacturing in connection with the Ena Project for the reasons listed below, and therefore the corresponding smaller scale lab system is required for this purchase. Repligen are the only supplier of GMP [HS1.1][PD1.2][HS1.3][PD1.4]Perfusion equipment that operates using Alternating Tangential Flow. There is no other commercially available system that can perform single-use ATF style perfusion suitable for use in a GMP cleanroom. ATF style perfusion has been selected for this Project as it is technically superior to the alternative TFF (Tangential Flow Filtration)-based or acoustic-based perfusion devices and there is wider industry adoption of ATF for use in bio-therapeutic manufacturing operations for this reason. Alternative suppliers found from online searches have single-use TFF systems available such as the Sartorius Sartoflow 5000 SU TFF System, but these are not suitable for use in perfusion applications and are not proven to readily connect with Thermo Fisher Dynadrive bioreactors. Extensive re-engineering of BMIC existing systems would need to take place in order to interface these devices and even then it is unlikely to achieve the process intensity outputs required for the Ena Project to achieve a suitable reduction in cost of goods.
