Summary of the contracting process

The University of Edinburgh is inviting tenders for the procurement of a Single-Cylinder Optically Accessible Research Engine, a project currently in the Tender stage. The specific delivery location for this procurement is Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. This open procedure encompasses the purchase of goods, with a bid submission deadline set for 29 January 2018 at 12:00 PM. Key specifications include the need for a transparent cylinder liner and Bowditch piston to facilitate various optical diagnostic techniques in research. The contract may include an initial period of 540 days with an option to extend for up to 4 years.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in engineering, optical manufacturing, and advanced research technologies. Suppliers capable of providing high-quality components such as UV grade fused silica and those with experience in producing specialised engine designs would be particularly well-suited to compete. Additionally, companies should ensure they meet the rigorous economic and technical criteria outlined by the University, including financial assurance and relevant industry experience, to successfully engage in this competitive procurement process.

Notice Title

Single-Cylinder Optically Accessible Research Engine

Notice Description

You are invited to tender for a single-cylinder optical research engine. An optically accessible research engine is a single-cylinder engine with a transparent cylinder liner (e.g. fused silica) and Bowditch piston with transparent window.

Lot Information

Lot 1

The University wishes to purchase an optically accessible research engine is a single-cylinder engine with a transparent cylinder liner (e.g. fused silica) and Bowditch piston with transparent window. The transparent cylinder and piston (i.e. 'optically accessible') allows for application of qualitative and quantitative non-intrusive laser diagnostic techniques to study in-cylinder flow, injection, mixing, ignition, combustion and pollutant formation. Diagnostic techniques that will be applied in this engine will be: particle image velocimetry, laser induced fluorescence, thermographic phosphorescence, coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy, chemiluminescence imaging, phase Doppler interferometry, structured laser illumination planar imaging, as well as other passive imaging techniques. All glass components will be made of UV grade fused silica (sapphire is not an option because it interferes with fluorescence imaging). This engine will be a spray-guided direct-injection petrol engine.. Economic operators may be excluded from this competition if they are in any of the situations referred to in regulation 58 of the Public Contracts (Scotland) Regulations 2015.

Renewal: This contract period is initially 18 months to cover the manufacture of the engine with the option to extend for 4 years to cover warranty
